The concept of “the stranger” suggests that foreignness is a psycho-cultural as well as a geographical matter. A stranger is not a wanderer, who may The Simmelian stranger has been extensively studied and critiqued. This paper suggests that although this body of literature has contributed to a conceptual refinement of the category, its analysis confines itself to Simmel's seminal essay on the stranger. The year 2008 marks the centenary of the first publication of Georg Simmel’s essay “The Stranger” (“ Der Fremde ”), in which the opposition between geographical proximity and distance and social proximity and distance was originally proposed and expounded in an explicit and theoretically cogent way. For Simmel, the stranger is a social role that combines the seemingly contradictory qualities of nearness and remoteness. The stranger is connected to the broader social community by only the most general (and generic) commonalities, yet is still relied on by large groups of people.

Georg simmel the stranger

6818, 2004. The metropolis and mental life. G Simmel.

Georg Simmel (March 1, 1858 – September 28, 1918) was a German sociologist, philosopher, and critic.. Simmel was one of the first generation of German sociologists: his neo-Kantian approach laid the foundations for sociological antipositivism, asking 'What is society?' in a direct allusion to Kant's question 'What is nature?', presenting pioneering analyses of social individuality and Simmel says ‘the objective individual is bound by no commitments which could prejudice his perception, understanding and evaluation of the given’ (p. 63). However, the stranger is inherently biased by his own experiences and past and so the perspective he offers to a setting in which he is strange is a product of those experiences.
